RAPTIVA

  • Raptiva is used to treat psoriasis, a common skin disease
  • Raptiva increases the risk of life-threatening infections, including PML
  • PML is a deadly virus for which there is no cure or treatment
  • At least 3 Raptiva patients have already died from PML
  • As of April 2009, Raptiva is being permanently withdrawn from the market
  • The Law Firm of Howard L. Nations represents Raptiva patients and their families

Raptiva is a once-weekly injection prescribed for adults with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis (the most common type). Psoriasis symptoms, ranging from mild to severely disabling, include red, scaly skin lesions that may be accompanied by itching, pain, cracking and bleeding.

Raptiva increases the risk of life-threatening infections, including bacterial sepsis, viral meningitis, invasive fungal disease, and progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). PML is a viral disease that causes irreversible brain damage and death. Raptiva was on the market for 5 years before the public was warned about these risks.

October 27, 2003: Raptiva approved by the FDA

October 16, 2008: Black box warning added to the label

February 19, 2009: Public Health Advisory issued by the FDA

March 13, 2009: Medication Guide updated & more warnings added to the label

April 8, 2009: Raptiva being removed from the market. See Genentech press release, Genentech Dear Doctor Letter and FDA press release.

Genentech, the manufacturer of Raptiva, has agreed to voluntarily withdraw Raptiva from the U.S. market because of the risk of PML. The withdrawal will be phased out so that by June 8, 2009, there will be no more Raptiva available in the U.S. For many Raptiva patients, this withdrawal will come too late.

If you or someone you know has suffered injury or death as a result of taking Raptiva, please contact our offices for a free consultation with one of our experienced pharmaceutical attorneys.
